Product Description

Like a data-guzzling turbo engine, advanced data mining has been powering post-genome biological studies for two decades. Reflecting this growth, Biological Data Mining presents comprehensive data mining concepts, theories, and applications in current biological and medical research. Each chapter is written by a distinguished team of interdisciplinary data mining researchers who cover state-of-the-art biological topics.

The first section of the book discusses challenges and opportunities in analyzing and mining biological sequences and structures to gain insight into molecular functions. The second section addresses emerging computational challenges in interpreting high-throughput Omics data. The book then describes the relationships between data mining and related areas of computing, including knowledge representation, information retrieval, and data integration for structured and unstructured biological data. The last part explores emerging data mining opportunities for biomedical applications.

This volume examines the concepts, problems, progress, and trends in developing and applying new data mining techniques to the rapidly growing field of genome biology. By studying the concepts and case studies presented, readers will gain significant insight and develop practical solutions for similar biological data mining projects in the future.

2 Reveiws for Biological Data Mining

  1. Huiying Zhao says:

With the increase in the volume of data being generated in biological field, it has become necessary to perform data mining to identify interesting patterns. The selected patterns will contribute for researchers to develop tools to analyze the individual systems in detail to gain new biological insights. This book Biological Data Mining contains information obtained from noteworthy samples of successful projects involving data mining in biological field. The book overviews the development on bioinformatics and discusses from five respects: Sequence, Structure and Function; Genomics, Transcriptions and Proteomics; Functional and Molecular Interaction Network; Literature, Ontology, and Knowledge Integration. On each respect, the data mining methods are explained deeply and understandably.

All chapters of this book are directly written by experts on specified fields and represent the frontends. This book provides valuable and inspiring approaches to currently hot spots. Personally I am interested in Protein Structure and Function. From this book I learned many useful methods and successful projects from protein structure classification to structure prediction, and to protein function prediction. This saved me lots of time to search for references.

  2. Bioinformatics is a data rich field and data mining has become a buzzword in biology and bioinformatics, as data mining promises to find interesting patterns from the data which are useful for researchers to understand the complexity behind complex biological processes. The extracted patterns can potentially lead to enrichment of the current knowledge. This book biological data mining is a one stop resource for getting a firsthand account of data mining applications in bioinformatics. The book covers most of the aspects of data mining for example classification, clustering and text mining applied to interesting biological problems touching the various aspects of bioinformatics. The content in this book is very relevant to the current state of the art in bioinformatics. The data mining methods in this book are very explained in the very best terms having the right combination of mathematics, biology and computational details making it suitable for bioinformaticians.

On a personal note I found this book to be a very helpful resource to understand the application of data mining techniques in biological context. I rate this book highly in terms of the content, coverage and the over all presentation.
