A premise of “Learning SQL” is that a large series of examples can illustrate the most significant capabilities of SQL. The examples are very well thought out and instructive. The choice of using MySQL to demonstrate these functions should be a winner. But the book for all the author’s efforts, knowledge of the subject, and writing strengths is hobbled by publisher carelessness: The examples provided are only those related to creation of the demonstration datablase. NONE of the valuable tutorial exmaples are provided in the text file supplied by the publisher. It is not clear if the publisher intends to sell access to these separately. Without inclusion of the examples I cannot strongly recommend an otherwise wonderful effort.

Buy instead the excellent book by Ben Forta “SQL in 10 Minutes”, which is a bit more simplistic but better.
This book is geared towards an older version of MySQL, ver 4.x. Despite my best efforts, and I have several books on SQL and am not entirely a beginner, I could not entirely translate the MySQL script source code associated with this book to MS SQL Server 2005 SQL.
Also, some of the “foreign keys” in the sample database have confusing names–a minor point but annoying.
Avoid this book, unless you want to use it (as I do) as a training exercise (since I have other SQL books) rather than a book you can learn from.

I found this book to be an easy read in the classic O’Reilly style. It was like the author was there with me, walking me through SQL step by step. I have never took to programming easily. It took me 2 tries for each on my 3 programming classes in college. Sad, I know. Thanks to this book, I was able to show up to my new application support job at (A very large company Healthcare company) with enough knowledge of databases to get through training without a hitch.

The book content is fine, unfortunately the book is just falling apart after very little use. And it seems I’ve missed the return window. So this is my only option to voice a complaint.
