5 Reveiws for Microsoft® Office SharePoint® Server 2007: The Complete Reference

  1. I was deeply disappointed with number and seriousness of errors in Chapter 17 of this book and the accompanying code download.

In addition to inconsistent references to SamplePage.htm (page 603) vs. SimplePage.htm (page 605), there are inconsistent references to ElementManifest.xml (step 13, page 605) vs. ElementsManifest.xml (step 7, page 604).

Even if you notice and correct those errors, two out the three CMD files you are asked to create (or copy from the downloadable ZIP file) have errors in them ranging from activatefeature in the FeatureInstaller.cmd file (should be installfeature) to missing GOTO’s in both FeatureInstaller.cmd and FeatureActivation.cmd.

It’s obvious this book was not given to a SharePoint developer and asked to work through the example in Chapter 17, step by step; otherwise, the errors would have been immediately obvious and correctable prior to going to print.

Wait until the errata is posted before buying this book.

  2. Randy Tompot says:

I am deeply disappointed with this purchase. After reading only 50 pages, I am disgusted by the poor grammar as well as many typos. For someone trying to learn the subject, such as myself, mistakes are not very tolerable. The installation chapter is also mistaken in that SQL Server 2005 SP2 does not already contain SP1. Did anyone proofread this book?

  3. M. Busa says:

Probably the most comprehensive book on the complete product. Lots of bits and pieces out there but this one covers it all. I can tell it was started out early as a few things in the SDK have changed, but the concepts in here as well as the broad coverage of the way things fit together is outstanding. I was particularly impressed with the detailed explanations on some of the finer aspects like search. For day to day, this is a must have on the shelf!

  4. If part of your job is installing SharePoint Server 2007 or SharePoint Serveices 3.0 this is the book that you should own. No other book that I have read is as detailed in describing the installation process. If you are only interested in development or administration you will find better books.

  5. Chris Love says:

In my efforts to get back up to speed on SharePoint technologies I found this book th simply be the best resource. It can be used either as a reference or as a straight read to get up to speed. I read about 85% of the book on a 4 hour flight and it was a Godsend!
