Product Description
As communications networks grow in size and complexity, it becomes increasingly difficult to locally manage and control all of the devices (e.g., routers, servers, and workstations) on those networks. SNMP (Simple Network Management Protocol) gives you a way to manage network devices remotely. You can use SNMP to check on the performance of a network (and its devices), to find out what problems may be occurring, and to fix them. This book covers the implementation of SNMP on Windows NT 3.51 and 4.0 (with a look ahead to NT 5.0), and Windows 95 systems. It contains:
- The basics of SNMP, computer networking, and network management
- Programming for NT SNMP; detailed developer information on installing the Microsoft SNMP service, using the Microsoft SNMP APIs, developing Win32 SNMP extension agents, implementing traps, and writing network management applications
- Extensive references to additional SNMP books, Web sites, newsgroups, Microsoft documents, and other Internet resources
The book comes with a CD-ROM containing a wealth of additional information: standards documents, sample code from the book, and many third-party, SNMP-related software tools, libraries, and demos.

This book is well-written and presents SNMP on the Windows NT system in a very clean manner. Worth getting even if you need to learn SNMP on a different system.

I originally bought this book when it was released for a project involving SNMP. Of course the project was cancelled. There were two other attempts but they ended in cancellation.
Years and a couple companies later, I am involved with a project that will finally happen.
I dusted this book off (literally) and gave it a read. The information is dated as it mainly talks about SNMPv1 and references SNMPv2. There is a comment of a new project SNMPv3 and talks about the future NT5
.
Do not get this book if you are looking to design something with SNMP. The software was written in Windows 95 and NT 4 days. I didn’t even bother attempting to load stuff from the CD.
However, if you are new to SNMP this book is surprisingly a decent introduction that can get you on your way for the greater tomes of today. Read the first part of the book on SNMP basics and maybe the trap chapter in section 2. Other then that don’t bother with the programming aspects as they are dated.
Again for a couple bucks, it’s not a bad intro. Too bad the author didn’t update it.

An excellent and practical look at the subject. Free of all the academic obfuscation which seems to usually accompany any SNMP liturature. A useful description of SNMP principles even if your’re not programming under Windows NT, although obviously tailored for that market.

This books is awful. The SNMP tools provided on the CDROM do not load up properly. The source code does not address anything new or clever that you can’t get from the MSDN. Save yourself the trouble of returning it (look elsewhere).

I was tasked with the job of developing an SNMP agent. I knew what the acronym stood for, and that was about it. The more I found out, the more I realized I had to do. I am still working on my agent development, but this book has gotten me well on my way. I have written an enterprise MIB, loaded it in the NT registry, and have a .dll which I modelled from this book… I still have a bit of work to do, but my MIB browser is recieving data that I programmed the windows NT SNMP service to send!! GREAT examples! the CD has been worth its weight in gold!
